Mousterlin, Protected coastal area in Fouesnant, France.
Mousterlin is a protected coastal area in Fouesnant featuring freshwater ponds, polder meadows, sand dunes, and varied wetland habitats across 479 hectares. A main basin of around 6 hectares is surrounded by natural grasslands and tidal zones.
The area underwent drainage and reclamation for farming between 1926 and 1946, a practice that stopped in 1960. In 1982, a coastal conservation organization took ownership of major portions to restore natural habitats.
Cattle graze in the northern sections, shaping the landscape through traditional farming methods. This ongoing practice creates a working relationship between people and the natural environment.
The site can be explored via a 5-kilometer walking path starting from Cleut-Rouz beach, with observation points positioned along the route. The flat terrain makes it accessible for visitors of varying fitness levels.
The marshland operates through a managed hydraulic system with sluice gates that deliberately control water levels to support rare plant species. This regulated approach maintains specialized habitats like those needed for marsh iris.
