Church of Saint-Jean-de-Malte, Aix-en-Provence, Gothic church in Aix-en-Provence, France.

The Church of Saint-Jean-de-Malte is a Gothic church building in Aix-en-Provence distinguished by its tall tower rising above the surrounding streets. Inside, visitors find a baroque organ, nineteenth-century colored windows, and paintings that line the walls.

Construction took place in the 1270s and the building belonged to the Knights Hospitaller, a military order that occupied it for centuries. Later it became a parish church, shifting its role to serve the wider community.

A monastic community continues to lead worship services here, keeping the space active in faith and prayer. The sound of chanting and bells marks the rhythm of days within these walls, connecting past devotion to present practice.

The location sits in the city center at a main intersection, making it easy to reach on foot from most areas. Note that access inside may be limited during active services, so visiting outside of service times works best.

This building was the first Gothic church constructed in the Provence region, marking a turning point for local architecture. Its early creation made it a model for other religious buildings that followed in the area.
