Diana Lounge

The Diana Lounge is a state room in the Palace of Versailles located between the Mars and Venus Salons. The space is defined by a central ceiling fresco depicting the goddess Diana with various mythological scenes, executed by skilled artists including Gabriel Blanchard.

The room was commissioned by King Louis XIV, who engaged a group of leading artists of the time to decorate it. This artistic collaboration was part of the broader embellishment of the palace during the Sun King's reign.

The ceiling paintings depict various scenes with the goddess Diana and reflect the French aristocracy's interest in Roman mythology. Visitors can observe how the artistic works express the tastes and interests of the royal court.

The room is readily accessible from the adjacent halls and opens to visitors during regular palace hours. It is worth taking time to observe the ceiling paintings from different angles, as the details are visible from multiple viewpoints.

The room underwent different restoration phases over the centuries, which altered the original color tones. An ongoing restoration campaign aims to recover the original color palette and preserve the aesthetic integrity of this royal space.
