Abbaye Toussaint d'Angers, Medieval abbey in Angers, France.

Abbaye Toussaint d'Angers is a medieval abbey located in the city of Angers with distinctive architectural features including a tau-shaped church plan and twin towers. The complex has a large courtyard surrounded by stone buildings that once housed the monastic community.

The abbey was founded in 1040 by Girard, a cathedral cantor, as a refuge for poor people in need of support. It later became an important religious center where Augustinian canons established their community around 1108.

The abbey served for centuries as a home for religious communities who lived and worked within its walls. The spaces today reflect how these residents organized their daily spiritual and communal life.

The abbey now houses the David d'Angers Gallery, which displays sculptures and artworks from renowned artist Pierre-Jean David in its galleries. You can walk through the historic spaces while viewing the collection displayed throughout the building.

The former refectory where monks once ate together has been transformed into a dance venue hosting performances and events. This unexpected conversion shows how the historical space has found new life beyond its original religious purpose.
