Planier, Island in the 8th arrondissement of Marseille, France
Île du Planier is a small, rocky island in the 8th arrondissement of Marseille, sitting roughly 12 miles (about 20 km) offshore in the Mediterranean Sea. A tall white lighthouse dominates the otherwise bare terrain, which is shaped by exposed rock, narrow coves, and almost no buildings.
The lighthouse on Île du Planier was built in the 19th century to help ships navigate safely through the western Mediterranean. Before its construction, the rocks around the island were a serious danger to passing vessels.
The island is only reachable by boat, so it is worth checking sea conditions before setting out. Diving is regulated in the area, so divers should look up the current rules before their visit.
Off the north side of the island lies the wreck of the French submarine Protée, which sank during World War II and now rests at over 165 feet (50 m) deep. It is considered one of the more demanding dive sites in the area and is reserved for experienced divers.
