St. Stephen's Greek Orthodox Cathedral
St. Stephen's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Greek Orthodox Cathedral in 16th arrondissement, Paris, France.
St. Stephen's Greek Orthodox Cathedral is a stone and brick church in Byzantine Revival style with notable interior details. Inside are a magnificent marble iconostasis and stained glass windows designed by Léon Avenet.
The cathedral was designed in 1890 by architect Émile Vaudremer and funded by banker Demetrius Stefanovich Schilizzi. It emerged as an important expression of the growing Greek Orthodox presence in Paris.
The cathedral serves as the main seat of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of France and is a key place for the Orthodox community in Paris. It shows how Eastern religious traditions are lived and practiced in this French city.
The cathedral is located on rue Georges-Bizet and is regularly open to visitors. Religious services take place throughout the week, so checking visiting hours in advance is helpful.
The cathedral is where singer Édith Piaf was married in 1962 and where a memorial service for opera singer Maria Callas took place in 1977. These moments connect the building with some of the most remarkable cultural figures of the 20th century.
