Château de Chaumont, Medieval castle in Mainsat, France

The ruined stone structure stands on elevated ground between Mainsat and La Serre-Bussière-Vieille in the Creuse department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Built in 1886 for opera singer Eugénie Bardet, the castle served as a sanctuary for 3000 Jewish refugees during World War II under OSE administration.

The castle represents a testament to French resistance efforts, sheltering Jewish children from persecution between 1939 and 1945 under director Lotte Schwarz.

The castle underwent restoration initiatives after English expatriate Dan Preston acquired the property in October 2022, following severe fire damage in 1986.

Future concert promoter Bill Graham and French humorist Popeck spent their childhood years at this castle while escaping Nazi persecution.
