Château de Grizac

The Château de Grizac is a medieval castle in Le Pont-de-Montvert in the Lozère region. The complex features a rectangular layout with a watchtower, agricultural outbuildings, and a central structure surrounded by defensive walls.

Guillaume Grimoard was born here in 1309 and later became Pope Urban V in 1362. This castle was an important family property that shaped his early life before his rise to the highest position in the Church.

The castle displays exhibits about Pope Urban V, showing objects and documents that tell the story of his life and religious importance.

The castle is open to visitors from mid-July through August, with guided tours available through the local tourist office. It helps to plan ahead since access is seasonal and the grounds can be uneven in places.

After the 15th century, the castle was abandoned and later repurposed as an agricultural facility and schoolhouse. This transformation reveals how medieval structures adapted to meet changing needs over the centuries.
