Notre Dame de Lorette National Cemetery, War cemetery and UNESCO World Heritage site in Ablain-Saint-Nazaire, France

This war cemetery spreads across a high ridge and holds tens of thousands of graves for French military personnel, along with several buildings that contain additional remains. The grounds are organized into sections with separate areas for different faiths and a large basilica rising at the center.

Heavy fighting between French and German troops at this location between 1914 and 1915 claimed the lives of many soldiers. After the war, the site was transformed into a lasting memorial and a basilica was built to honor those who died.

The basilica and its distinctive tower shape how visitors experience remembrance at this location. People gather here to honor fallen soldiers through flowers, quiet reflection, and the annual ceremonies that bring the community together.

The cemetery sits on a high plateau that is reached by walking from the entrance, with several paths winding through the grounds. You will find facilities near the south entrance, and it is best to allow time to walk through the various sections at a measured pace.

Since 1920, a group of volunteer guards has performed a ceremony every Sunday to rekindle the Eternal Flame at this site. This weekly ritual shows how the community has remained committed to keeping the memory of those who died alive.
