Citadelle Vauban du Palais

The Vauban Citadel extends across six bastions made of granite, with military buildings designed to accommodate 3,000 soldiers near the Le Palais harbor.

Originally founded in the 11th century by Benedictine monks, the fortress underwent major transformations by the Gondi family and military architect Vauban during the 1680s.

The citadel houses an art and history museum displaying regional artifacts, maritime collections, and antique maps that document the rich heritage of Belle-Île-en-Mer.

The monument includes a bar, garden, parking facilities, and conference spaces, with varying opening hours that require advance verification before planning a visit.

The current owners, the Larquetoux family, purchased the citadel in 1960 and spent 45 years restoring its structures and establishing its museum collections.
