Morne du Vitet

Morne du Vitet is the highest mountain on Saint Barthélemy, rising 286 meters above sea level. Multiple marked hiking trails lead to the summit, with the eastern path offering the gentlest climb.

French colonizers in the 17th century recognized the mountain's strategic position for watching ships and defending the island. The height made it a natural choice for maritime surveillance and protection against threats.

Local people gather here to watch the sunrise paint the sea in different colors each morning. The summit holds meaning as a place where residents connect with the island's natural surroundings.

The climb takes roughly 1 to 2 hours depending on your fitness level and starting point along the marked trail. It is best to start early in the morning to catch the sunrise and avoid the daytime heat.

The southern slope plunges steeply toward the coast, dropping its entire height in just 400 meters. This dramatic incline makes the mountain visually striking when viewed from certain vantage points offshore.
