The building was completed in 1972 as part of a cultural and sports complex built by the City of Paris between Porte Brancion and Porte de la Plaine, on the edge of the périphérique in the 15th arrondissement. The theatre opened in 1973 with Georg Büchner's Léonce et Léna. In 1980 it became a district theatre under Régis Santon, and Cécile Reiff Junqua later directed it before Marion Dufranc took over in 2025.

The venue hosts nearly daily performances including puppet shows, musicals, and circus acts designed mainly for children and families. It has become an important stage for emerging artists and small theater companies seeking a space to present their work.
