Défilé d'Entre-Roches, Natural canyon in Doubs department, France.
The Défilé d'Entre-Roches is a canyon in the Doubs department where the Doubs River flows through towering limestone cliffs. The rock walls rise dramatically on both sides of the water, creating a narrow passage carved into the landscape.
The canyon was carved by the Doubs River as it gradually cut through layers of limestone rock over millions of years. This slow erosion process shaped the narrow passage and tall walls that exist today.
The site belongs to the Free Republic of Saugeais, a French traditional micronation encompassing eleven municipalities in the Haut-Doubs region.
Several parking areas are positioned along the route to serve as starting points for exploration and hiking trips. Walking along the paths that follow the river is the main way to experience and appreciate the gorge.
The canyon walls support specialized plant species adapted to the rocky conditions found in the Jura mountain region. These plants thrive in the cracks and ledges of the steep walls and are rarely seen elsewhere.
