Fort de l'Eve, Coastal defense fort in Saint-Nazaire, France.
Fort de l'Eve is a fortification at the Loire estuary entrance, equipped with underground bunkers, firing platforms, and observation posts. The structures spread across the site and offer views over the Atlantic coastline.
Construction took place between 1891 and 1895 as part of France's coastal defense system. It played a key role during both World Wars, especially under German occupation from 1940 to 1945.
The fort reflects late 19th-century military engineering and shows how coastal defense was conceived and built during that era. Its preserved structures tell of a time when such fortifications shaped a maritime power's identity.
The site is accessible via Route du Fort de l'Eve with a large parking area available. Access is straightforward, and lifeguards patrol the nearby beach during summer months.
The original military installations were partly converted into a camping area and equipped beach. This reuse has allowed the site to function as both heritage location and recreation space today.
