Fort du Paillet, Military fort in Dardilly, France
Fort du Paillet is a military fort located near Dardilly at an elevation of about 400 meters with a polygonal design. The structure is surrounded by deep dry moats that form part of its defensive layout.
The fort was built between 1883 and 1886 as part of Lyon's outer defense line. It was designed by engineer General Serre de Rivières to house a significant military garrison.
The fort houses several organizations, including a museum dedicated to traditional crafts and tools from earlier times. You can see how artisanal techniques worked in the past through the displayed objects and exhibits.
Guided tours are offered on the first Saturday of each month and provide a good way to explore the site. Additional visiting opportunities happen during Heritage Days if you want to plan your trip around these dates.
The fort's powder storage areas had specialized systems to control moisture and humidity levels. These facilities protected large quantities of explosive material from damage by maintaining precise environmental conditions.
