Antiquaille Hospital
Antiquaille Hospital, Historical medical center in 5th arrondissement of Lyon, France
Antiquaille Hospital is a complex of multiple buildings featuring architecture from different periods, situated on a hillside in Lyon's 5th arrondissement. The structures clearly show how the site was repeatedly renovated and adapted across the centuries.
The building began as a castle in 1508, was transformed into a Visitandine convent during the 17th century, and became a hospital from 1803 onward. These three phases shaped its physical and functional evolution over nearly 500 years.
The site served as a religious community for centuries, where nuns and later medical staff lived and worked together. Visitors can sense how different groups shaped the place through their daily presence over time.
The site can be explored on foot, but the hillside location means some paths are steep and comfortable shoes are recommended. It helps to check in advance which areas are accessible to visitors, as not all buildings are regularly open.
Underground sections contain the prison cells of Saint Pothin, a martyr from the early Christianization of Gaul. These hidden chambers provide a direct link to the origins of Christianity in the region.
