Hôpital Édouard-Herriot

The hospital extends over 156,000 square meters with multiple pavilions connected by underground tunnels for efficient transport of supplies and medical equipment.

Construction began in 1913 under architect Tony Garnier's direction and completed in 1933, with the facility receiving its current name in 1935.

The architectural design follows early 20th century health principles, incorporating spacious gardens and natural light throughout the medical complex.

The facility maintains 29 operating rooms, employs 4,600 staff including 1,200 physicians, and handles 115,000 emergency visits annually.

The hospital performed the first hand transplant in 1998 and the first double hand and forearm transplant in 2000.
