Hôpital éphémère, Alternative art space in 18th arrondissement, France
Hôpital Éphémère was a repurposed hospital building that provided artist studios, recording facilities, and exhibition galleries. Located within Hospital Bretonneau in the 18th arrondissement, it transformed the medical facility's rooms into working and display spaces for creative professionals.
Between 1990 and 1997, the Association Usines Ephemeres operated the space under an agreement with Paris public hospitals to transform the vacant building. The project concluded when the hospital structure was demolished in 1995.
The space welcomed French artists and musicians who created and exhibited work in the hospital's repurposed rooms. The converted medical corridors became studios where creative expression thrived during the 1990s.
Access to the space required formal arrangements with Paris public hospital authorities for artist residents. Participating artists contributed their creations to institutional collections as part of the residency terms.
The initiative merged hospital architecture with artistic production, creating an unconventional venue for creative work within an existing structure. This repurposing approach influenced similar artistic projects that emerged across France during the 1990s.
