Hôtel-Dieu de Caen, Medieval hospital in Caen, France
The Hôtel-Dieu de Caen extends over 210 meters in length and 31 meters in width, featuring large windows designed for patient comfort and natural light.
Founded between the 11th and 12th centuries, the hospital moved to the former Ladies Abbey in the 19th century, with its portal now preserved at the antiquarians museum.
Five regular canons of the Order of Saint Augustine managed the hospital, while nuns from Rouen provided medical care to patients starting from 1629.
The facility transformed into the modern Clemenceau Hospital in 1908, continuing its medical services while maintaining its historical heritage designation.
The hospital's treasury was kept in a chest with two locks, with keys held separately by the prior and the eldest of the sworn members.
