Hôtel de Gunsburg, Private mansion in 17th arrondissement of Paris, France

The Hôtel de Günzburg stands at 7 rue de Tilsitt, a pale beige stone mansion built in 1868. Its street facade has three round-arched ground-floor openings with metal grilles, two green bronze figures on pedestals between the left and centre arches, and a carved band above. The next level has two central arches flanked by stone figures holding garlands, side windows with iron balconies, and a top floor of three railed windows under a slate roof with dormers.

Built in 1868 for Baron Joseph de Günzburg, the mansion was designed by Charles Rohault de Fleury from plans drawn by Jacques-Ignace Hittorff in 1853. In June 1886 Count Philippe Spiridion Vitali bought it at auction for 2.2 million francs and made it both his Paris residence and the seat of the Régie générale des chemins de fer. The DAGPB occupied it from 1965 to 1974; the facades, roofs, entrance hall, two staircases and three first-floor salons were listed in 1983.

The building takes its name from Baron Joseph de Günzburg, who commissioned it in 1868; it passed to Count Vitali in 1886, so the family did not hold it for generations. Interior decoration was entrusted to Charles Chaplin, Alexandre Denuelle and Alexis-Joseph Mazerolle, whose work survives in the first-floor gallery and three salons.

The property sits near Charles de Gaulle - Étoile metro station, making it easily accessible by public transport. Today it functions as office space and is protected by law as a classified historical monument.

The facade sculptures by Frédéric-Louis Bogino depict Agriculture and Industry, a pairing that reflects the Second Empire taste for allegory. The interior decoration was entrusted to Charles Chaplin, Alexandre Denuelle and Alexis-Joseph Mazerolle. The 1983 listing protects the facades, roofs, entrance hall, both grand staircases with their wrought-iron railings, and the first-floor gallery and three salons.
