L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, Art installation at Place Charles de Gaulle, Paris, France
L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped was a temporary art installation that covered the historic monument with silver-blue polypropylene fabric and red rope. The covering transformed the exterior of the structure entirely, turning a familiar Parisian sight into something unexpected.
Artist Christo conceived the idea in 1961 while living nearby, but the project did not materialize until 60 years later. The installation took place in 2021 and was one of the artist's final works.
The wrapped monument sparked conversations about how contemporary art can reframe historical structures in cities. Visitors encountered the familiar landmark in a completely different way, prompting reflection on what we see in public spaces every day.
The installation was a public project in central Paris that could be viewed entirely from outside at no cost. Visitors could experience the artwork from different angles around the plaza.
Despite both artists passing away before completion, their team finished the project to honor their artistic vision. The eternal flame and remembrance ceremonies remained accessible throughout the installation.
