17th arrondissement of Paris
17th arrondissement of Paris, Administrative district on the right bank of Seine, Paris, France.
This district on the right bank of the Seine includes four quarters named Ternes, Monceau, Batignolles, and Epinettes, each forming its own residential and commercial area. Wide boulevards run through the arrondissement and link the different sections together.
The arrondissement was formed in 1860 during the restructuring of Paris under Napoleon III from areas that were still mostly rural at the time. Population reached nearly 232,000 in 1954 and has since settled around 164,000.
The Musée National Jean-Jacques Henner displays paintings and works by the Alsatian artist in a converted 19th-century townhouse. Visitors walk through rooms where the building itself has become part of the exhibition experience.
Several metro lines connect the district to central Paris, including Lines 2, 3, and 13, with stations spread across all four quarters. Pedestrians can explore the different areas by following the main boulevards and smaller side streets.
The district town hall is the only modern administrative building among all Paris arrondissement town halls and was built after the original structure was torn down in 1971. While other town halls date back to the 19th century, this one stands out with its contemporary style.
