Hommage au capitaine Dreyfus, Bronze sculpture in 6th arrondissement, France

The sculpture depicts Captain Alfred Dreyfus holding a broken sword before his face and stands in Place Pierre-Lafue. The bronze figure with its emotional gesture documents a turning point in French legal history.

The monument was created in 1988 by artist Tim to mark the centennial of the Dreyfus Affair. This historical controversy had exposed deep antisemitic prejudices embedded in French authorities and society.

The inscription on the monument comes from a letter Dreyfus wrote to his wife, expressing his desire to have his honor restored. It reminds visitors of the personal cost of injustice and the hope that sustained him during his imprisonment.

The monument sits on a public square and is easy to reach by foot. You can view it at any time of day or night since it benefits from surrounding street lighting.

The sculpture underwent several location changes before finding its current home. An early proposal to place it at the Military School was rejected, sparking years of debate about how to honor this historical figure.
