Église Notre-Dame des Champs

Église Notre-Dame des Champs, Romanesque Revival church in 6th arrondissement of Paris, France

Description

Église Notre-Dame des Champs is a church built in Romanesque Revival style, defined by strong forms and rounded arches. Inside, rows of cruciform pillars support the curved arcades that shape the interior space.

History

The building was reconstructed between 1867 and 1876 by architect Léon Ginain, replacing an earlier place of worship on the site. This project came from a desire to create a modern house of prayer that met contemporary needs.

Culture

Inside, twenty-two paintings by Joseph Aubert show scenes from the life of Mary. These works came from an artistic effort that spanned many years.

Practical

The church is located on Boulevard du Montparnasse and is open for visitors interested in seeing its religious and architectural features. Regular services take place, so visitors should check times in advance to plan a visit that works for them.

Did you know?

The building features an iron framework designed by Gustave Eiffel that blends its Romanesque Revival elements with modern construction techniques. This technical solution shows how traditional architecture and 19th-century engineering came together.
