The building was reconstructed between 1867 and 1876 by architect Léon Ginain, replacing an earlier place of worship on the site. This project came from a desire to create a modern house of prayer that met contemporary needs.

Inside, twenty-two paintings by Joseph Aubert show scenes from the life of Mary. These works came from an artistic effort that spanned many years.
