Lac Miroir, Alpine lake in Ceillac, France.
Lac Miroir is an alpine lake in the French Alps sitting at about 2200 meters elevation, where the water surface reflects the surrounding mountain peaks. The lake occupies a remote high valley surrounded by steep slopes and alpine meadows.
The first paths to the lake emerged in the 17th century when local shepherds used these high elevations for grazing sheep and developed simple trails. These early routes became the foundation for today's hiking paths.
The lake serves as a landmark along the GR5 hiking trail, a long-distance path that brings walkers through the Alps on their journey between distant regions.
The hike from the Pied du Mélezet parking area takes about two hours and follows marked trails with steady elevation gain. The paths are generally well-maintained during the hiking season, though the altitude and mountain weather require good physical preparation.
The waters are home to rainbow trout, making it possible to fish at this alpine elevation. This fish population demonstrates how ecosystems adapt to survive in such extreme heights.
