Public secondary school in central Grenoble offering general education and vocational programs. The school descends from the Jesuit college founded in Grenoble in 1651; construction of the buildings and the old Jesuit chapel began in 1660 with subsidies from Louis XIV, and in 1699 royal letters patent made it the Royal-Dauphin. The Jesuits taught until 1763, and in 1796 the institution became the École centrale de l'Isère. The old Jesuit buildings have been inscribed as monuments historiques since 26 February 1964.

Bears the name of French novelist Stendhal, born in Grenoble in 1783, who gained international recognition for his psychological novels. Since its founding, the institution has educated generations of students from the Isère region and ranks among the most respected educational establishments in the city. Its central location makes it an important meeting point for young people from various neighborhoods.

The school stands at 1 bis, place Jean-Achard in central Grenoble. It is a working school, so the interior is closed during class hours; the chapel can only be entered with a permit obtained from the main office. Certain Saturdays the 1673 sundial can be visited, with dates announced by staff at the start of the school year.

The Jesuit chapel and the 1673 sundial by Father Bonfa are classified as monuments historiques, the sundial since 1920 and the old buildings since 26 February 1964. The sundial uses two fixed mirrors and gives readings tied to astrology; it was restored in 1984 and is now glazed for protection. Some Saturdays it can be visited.
