Le Plantier de Costebelle, Neo-Palladian villa in Hyères, France
Le Plantier de Costebelle is a Neo-Palladian villa on the eastern slope of Mont des Oiseaux overlooking Hyères harbor and the islands beyond. The estate includes the main residence, support buildings, and a botanical garden spread across the grounds.
A baroness commissioned the villa in 1857 following classical design principles and originally called it Villa of the Palms. A prominent writer later purchased the property and reshaped its purpose and character.
The house became a meeting place for writers and artists who gathered here to exchange ideas and find inspiration. Visitors can still see the rooms where these gatherings took place.
The property is accessible only by guided tour during the warmer months, with groups limited to 5 to 30 participants. Advance reservations are necessary to secure a spot.
Enameled plaques scattered throughout the botanical garden tell the story of the property and its visitors. These small markers offer insight into the personal histories connected to the place.
