Le Plantier de Costebelle, Neo-Palladian villa in Hyères, France
Le Plantier de Costebelle is a Palladian-style villa on the eastern slope of Mont des Oiseaux in Hyères, overlooking the harbor and the offshore islands. The property includes the main house and a botanical garden on the surrounding grounds.
A baroness had the villa built in 1857 in a classical style, naming it Villa of the Palms. The writer Edmond de Goncourt later bought the property and turned it into a gathering place for artists and intellectuals of his time.
The house became a meeting place for writers and artists who gathered here to exchange ideas and find inspiration. Visitors can still see the rooms where these gatherings took place.
The property can only be visited on a guided tour, generally offered during the warmer months of the year. Booking in advance is recommended, as group sizes are kept small.
Enameled plaques placed throughout the botanical garden tell stories about the people who visited and lived here. These small markers are scattered across the grounds and can be read as you walk through the garden.
