Olbia de Provence, Greek archaeological site in Hyères, France
Olbia de Provence is an ancient Greek city on the Mediterranean coast with well-preserved remains of fortification walls, houses, and public buildings. The archaeological excavations reveal the typical layout of an ancient colony with paved streets, shops, and private homes built closely together.
The city was founded around 325 BC by Greek settlers from Marseille to control trade routes along the Mediterranean coast. It grew into an important port and trading center, remaining a hub of cultural and economic activity in the region for several centuries.
The excavated artifacts, including ceramics, coins, and inscriptions, demonstrate the integration of Greek traditions with local practices in this Mediterranean trading center.
The site is accessible from April through October and offers the best experience with guided tours available in several languages. When visiting, wear comfortable shoes since the paths cross uneven ground and there are few shaded areas.
Within the ancient city boundaries stands the medieval abbey Saint-Pierre de l'Almanarre, showing how earlier generations used the ancient ruins when planning their own buildings. This place combines more than a thousand years of settlement and architecture in one location.
