Vieille ville Cité Médiévale

The Vieille Ville is a medieval old town in Hyères built on steep terrain with narrow cobblestone streets that wind upward through a maze of ancient stone buildings. Defensive walls encircle this elevated settlement and form a clear boundary that defines the historic area.

The area saw early settlement by Greek colonists whose influence persisted before the medieval town developed later. The fortifications were reinforced and modified over centuries to protect the settlement against shifting threats.

The old quarter remains a living neighborhood where residents and visitors move through narrow streets lined with stone facades and small local shops. The tight, winding paths create a sense of closeness that shapes daily life here.

Access works best on foot through one of the lower gates, as the terrain is steep and traffic is limited in the upper zones. Sturdy footwear is advisable since the cobblestone paths are uneven and can be slippery.

From the castle ruins at the top, views stretch across the sea and the nearby islands, visible from several pathways that few visitors explore. This vantage point often goes unnoticed despite offering one of the broadest views of the coastline.
