Maison forte de Reignac, Fortified castle in Tursac, France

The Maison forte de Reignac is a castle built into a limestone cliff, with multiple rooms carved directly into the rock and connected by passageways. The interior chambers are furnished and show how inhabitants once used the space.

This fortified structure began in the 14th century as both a defensive stronghold and a residence for its inhabitants. The original construction methods and design have remained intact through the centuries.

The castle displays collections of medieval objects and documents that reveal how justice and daily life worked in the region. These items show visitors what people valued and feared during that era.

This location welcomes visitors daily from February through December with guided tours and information panels in eight languages. Knowledgeable guides help you understand the underground rooms and how they were originally used.

This is the only fully preserved cave-carved castle in France, combining above-ground structure with chambers cut directly into stone. This hybrid design appears nowhere else in the country in such complete form.
