The museum's name refers to the city's own past, and its displays are arranged in thirteen sequences that trace Marseille from prehistory to the 18th century. Among the objects are a 2nd-century ship hull and a 1.2-tonne Ionic capital found in 1952, shown alongside votive stelae from a sanctuary of Cybele.
The museum sits next to a shopping center and is easy to reach on foot, with signs guiding you to the entrance. It works best to visit on a weekday so you have time to walk through the exhibits and look at the collections without rushing.
