L’Ombrière du Vieux-Port de Marseille

L'Ombrière du Vieux-Port is a steel canopy structure that stretches across the historic port and is supported by eight columns. The construction features around 120 polished metal panels that function like mirrors, capturing light and reflections of the surrounding harbor.

The structure opened in 2013 as part of Marseille-Provence European Capital of Culture initiative. This installation marked a renewal of the historic port area and transformed how visitors experience this central waterfront location.

This modern installation by architect Norman Foster functions as both shelter and mirror of port life. The polished panels capture reflections of boats, people, and water throughout the day, making the space feel alive and connected to its surroundings.

The canopy provides shade and protection while watching harbor activity and waiting for ferry departures. The area can become crowded during peak hours, and lighting conditions constantly shift throughout the day, affecting how the mirrors reflect.

At sunrise and sunset, the mirrored panels create shifting light effects that transform the space entirely compared to midday hours. These changing visual moments are often overlooked but offer a completely different perspective on the harbor.
