Phare du Port des Saintes, Lighthouse in Les Saintes, Guadeloupe, France
The Faro del Puerto de Les Saintes is a lighthouse on the small island group of Les Saintes, part of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. It sits at the edge of the harbor, facing open water, and is clearly visible from the coast.
The lighthouse was built to guide ships through the waters around Les Saintes, islands that have been used for fishing and sea trade for centuries. The archipelago changed hands between France and Britain several times before becoming permanently French.
The lighthouse can be reached on foot from the paths around the harbor of Terre-de-Haut, the main village of the island group. Visiting in the early morning or late afternoon gives the best light conditions on the water.
Les Saintes is so small that the lighthouse serves at the same time as a navigation marker for boats and as a landmark for anyone walking the shore. Although technology has replaced the old lighthouse keepers, the light still runs every night without interruption.
