Pic de l'Ours is a summit in the Esterel Massif with distinctive red rhyolite rocks and steep slopes. The landscape features rugged rock formations that drop toward the Mediterranean coast.
The summit formed approximately 250 million years ago during volcanic activity in the Permian period. These geological processes created the red rhyolite composition that defines the massif today.
The mountain network includes numerous marked trails that connect different sections of the Esterel Massif, representing centuries of local mountaineering traditions.
The hike begins at the Col Notre Dame parking area with marked trails leading to the summit. The route is well-signed and requires standard hiking ability.
A 56-meter telecommunications tower sits at the summit and broadcasts television signals to the surrounding region. This tower is visible from below and marks the highest point of the mountain.
