Mémorial des déportations, City museum and memorial in 2nd arrondissement, Marseille, France.
The memorial occupies a German-built blockhouse from 1943 that served as part of the defensive fortifications against potential Allied invasions in Provence during World War II.
Originally inaugurated in 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of concentration camp liberation, the memorial underwent extensive renovations and reopened in December 2019 with expanded exhibitions.
The memorial preserves testimonies and archives documenting the deportation of Jewish residents, political resistants, and other victims of Nazi persecution from Marseille during the occupation period.
The museum operates Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 to 18:00 and weekends from 09:30 to 18:00, offering free admission within capacity limits and wheelchair accessibility for all visitors.
Built within an authentic German bunker from World War II, the memorial stands at the foot of Fort Saint-Jean, directly facing the old districts destroyed during the 1943 raids.
