Place Henri-IV, Square in the intra-muros of Vannes, Morbihan, France

Place Henri-IV is a square about 20 metres on each side, roughly 400 m², in the intra-muros of Vannes on the slope of the Mené hill. It is bordered by 15th- and 16th-century half-timbered houses, several of them listed as monuments historiques. It opens south-east onto Place Saint-Pierre and the cathedral, south-west onto Rue Saint-Salomon, and north onto Rue des Chanoines and Rue Émile-Burgault.

The square is framed by half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, which date its layout. In the 18th century it was called Mallièvre, a deformation of the Breton Men-Guevr, "goat stone". It was briefly named Place du Département during the Revolutionary period, then received its present name in the 19th century. In the 1860s a bird market was held here, where sellers called Pilorgets mainly brought linnets and goldfinches.

The square's name comes from its Breton name Men-Guevr, "stone of the goats", deformed into Mallièvre in the 18th century; it was renamed Place Henri-IV in the 19th century after a revolutionary spell as Place du Département. In the 1860s bird sellers called Pilorgets sold linnets and goldfinches here. On the Place Saint-Pierre side, a beam at no. 2 bears the carved inscription "Le chat qui dort est esveillé".

The square is about 20 metres across, roughly 400 m², on the hill of Mené inside the old walls. It opens south-east onto place Saint-Pierre and the cathedral, south-west onto rue Saint-Salomon, and north onto rue des Chanoines and rue Émile-Burgault. Approach on foot through these streets; the surface is level and there are no steps on the square itself.

The square's Breton name, Men-Guevr, means "goat stone"; in the 18th century it was recorded as Mallièvre. In the 1860s bird sellers known as Pilorgets traded here, mainly linnets and goldfinches. On the Place Saint-Pierre side, a beam at no. 2 carries the carved inscription "Le chat qui dort est esveillé".
