Réserve naturelle géologique de Haute-Provence, National nature reserve in Alpes de Haute-Provence, France

The geological reserve spans 18 protected sites across southeastern France, containing extensive fossil deposits and notable geological formations between the Verdon and Durance rivers.

The reserve, established in 1984, preserves geological evidence from 130 million years ago when giant ammonites inhabited an ocean covering the Pre-Alps region.

Local museums in Digne-les-Bains, Castellane, and Barles present collections of fossils and geological specimens while offering educational programs about Earth sciences.

Three marked paths guide visitors through the reserve, connecting various geological sites while strict regulations prohibit unauthorized fossil collection throughout the protected area.

The Digne-les-Bains ammonite slab displays 1,500 preserved Coroniceras Multicostatum specimens from the Lower Jurassic period, tilted at a 60-degree angle.
