The Ardèche Gorges extend over 22 kilometers with limestone cliffs reaching heights of 250 meters above the winding Ardèche River.
In 1980, this protected area received national nature reserve status, covering 1,572 hectares before expanding to 1,950 hectares in 2018.
The reserve represents the northern edge of Mediterranean landscapes, hosting more than 500 plant species adapted to drought and limestone soil conditions.
The management organization implements specific regulations for outdoor activities such as climbing, caving, and river navigation to minimize environmental impact.
The reserve contains thirty beavers, eighteen bat species, and numerous birds of prey including Bonelli's eagle and peregrine falcons.
