BETASOM, Submarine base in Bacalan district of Bordeaux, France
BETASOM is a naval bunker in Bordeaux with massive concrete construction that spans a considerable length. The structure consists of several parallel chambers that once protected submarines and now serve as a venue for art exhibitions.
The bunker was built in the early 1940s and initially served the Italian Navy as an operational base. After the war, the facility was eventually repurposed for cultural use.
The site now hosts the Bassins des Lumières digital art center, which presents multimedia exhibitions within the former submarine chambers. The digital installations use the massive concrete walls and spatial qualities of the original bunker as part of the artistic experience.
The site is located in a harbor district and is accessible by public transportation. Visitors should allow time to explore the large underground spaces at a comfortable pace.
The concrete construction was an engineering challenge due to the marshy ground beneath this harbor district. Specialized building techniques were needed to keep the massive structure stable on unstable soil.
