Château de Lucéram

Château de Lucéram stands on a raised point overlooking the village, positioned beside the church and cemetery. The structure features arched passages, stone staircases, and thick walls built from local grey stone, maintaining the appearance of a medieval fortress.

Lucéram was first documented in 1057 as a fortified settlement, with the castle developing from this early defensive structure. The site later became the center of a Knights Hospitaller commandery in the 1700s, reflecting its lasting importance as a strategic location.

The Notre-Dame de Pitié chapel occupies part of the structure, showing how this location served both religious and defensive purposes across centuries. Walking through the remaining rooms, visitors can still observe the blend of these two distinct functions in the architecture.

Access is through interconnected alleys and staircases that wind past restored houses with Gothic features. The paths are steep and uneven in places, so sturdy shoes and a steady pace are recommended when exploring these narrow passages.

The castle sits within a landscape shaped by terraced fields carved into the surrounding slopes. These agricultural terraces, built over centuries, remain visible today and show how the land around it was carefully managed for farming over generations.
