Montagne d'Or mine, mine in France
Montagne d'Or is a gold mining project located in the northwestern region of French Guiana, roughly 180 kilometers west of Cayenne. The site sits within dense tropical forest on hilly terrain, with operations planned using open-pit methods to extract gold from estimated reserves of over 54 million tons of ore.
An environmental and social impact assessment for the project was completed in early 2015. The region has a long history of gold exploration dating back to the 1800s when the Paul Isnard mine was discovered in the area.
The name refers to the gold deposits found in this area. The site exists within a region inhabited by local and indigenous communities who have maintained deep connections with the forest and its resources for generations.
The site is primarily accessible via a forest road stretching about 120 kilometers from the nearby town of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. The area has a tropical climate with dense forest, so visitors should be prepared for wet conditions and challenging terrain.
The project sits less than 500 meters from protected nature reserves, which has created significant environmental concerns. This proximity to conservation areas transformed the site into a focal point for debates about resource extraction and environmental protection.
