Fontaine des Fleuves, Monumental fountain at Place de la Concorde, Paris, France
The Fontaine des Fleuves is a monumental fountain at Place de la Concorde with allegorical stone figures representing two major French rivers. Water flows from vessels held by these large statues into a basin below.
This fountain was completed in 1836 as part of a major redesign of Place de la Concorde in the 19th century. Architect Jacques-Ignace Hittorff designed the structure using cast iron and bronze.
The fountain depicts the Rhine and Rhone rivers through large figures holding grapes and grain, connecting water with France's agricultural and commercial resources. These representations show how the rivers shaped the country's economy and daily life.
The fountain sits on the northern side of the square and is easily reached from the Concorde metro station. You can view the figures clearly from multiple angles by walking around the basin.
The water spouts are surrounded by tritons and neriads adorned with intricate decorations of corals, shells, flowers, and fruits. These delicate details are often overlooked despite adding liveliness to the fountain.
