Abbaye du Sauvoir-sous-Laon, Cistercian monastery in Athies-sous-Laon, France.
Abbaye du Sauvoir-sous-Laon was a Cistercian monastery located near Laon in northern France, built on slightly elevated ground. The complex included stone walls, drainage systems, and multiple building structures from different medieval periods whose remains lie beneath the surface today.
Founded in 1220 to provide a home for nuns unable to enter Montreuil-les-Dames Abbey, this monastery was placed under the supervision of Foigny Abbey. It expanded through donations throughout the medieval period and remained active until the time of the French Revolution.
This religious community followed strict monastic practices and contributed to manuscript production as part of their daily spiritual work. The site reflected the discipline and rhythm of religious life as it was lived by women devoted to contemplation and labor.
The site has been archaeologically excavated and the foundations are visible beneath the earth, giving a sense of the original layout. When visiting, be aware that this is largely an open field where the structures have been revealed through excavation rather than preserved above ground.
A notable connection to this monastery involved Jeanne of Flanders, widow of the nobleman Enguerrand IV of Coucy, who made several donations to support its work. She went on to become abbess of the community, an unusual position for a widowed noblewoman during that era.
