Refuge de Matalza, Mountain hut in Zicavo, France.
The Refuge de Matalza stands at 1410 meters elevation in the Corsican mountains, serving as a stone-built shelter for hikers traversing the challenging GR20 trail through the Monte Incudine massif.
Built in 2012 by the commune of Zicavo, this refuge replaced ancient sheepfolds that once served as seasonal gathering points for shepherds during traditional transhumance practices in the Corsican highlands.
The refuge represents the continuation of Corsican pastoral traditions, where mountain shelters have long provided essential rest points for shepherds and their flocks moving between seasonal grazing areas.
Open from May to October, the refuge accommodates up to 79 people in dormitories and offers hot meals, showers, and camping options for hikers completing the demanding GR20 trail sections.
The refuge features a distinctive Dôme Étoilé sleeping area and serves as the only accommodation point between the Asinau and Usciolu stages of the famous GR20 hiking route.
