Château de la Londe, Heritage castle in Biéville-Beuville, France

Château de la Londe is an 18th-century manor house at the end of a long tree-lined drive in Biéville-Beuville. The rectangular main building has a ground floor and one upper storey under a slate hipped roof pierced by dormer windows, with a projecting central bay topped by a triangular pediment on both the courtyard and garden sides. A few steps lead to the entrance door, and two pavilions once used as sheds and stables flank the wrought-iron gate.

Jacques Andrey des Pommeraies, a royal counselor, commissioned the building in 1743 and added pavilions and a chapel over the following years. These expansions demonstrate how the property grew to reflect the family's increasing prominence and needs during the 1700s.

The château belongs to the group of "maisons des champs" built around 1750 by notables of Caen, and its name comes from the fief of la Londe, raised to a fief de haubert in 1764. The Andrey family kept the estate for generations; in 1791 a refractory priest, François-Richard-Aimé Langlois, was arrested here but released three months later. The property later passed by marriage to the Rouxelin de Formigny family, who still owned it at the start of the 21st century.

The château stands at the end of a long tree-lined drive in Biéville-Beuville, northeast of Épron in the Calvados. The entrance is marked by a wrought-iron gate flanked by two pavilions, once used as a shed and stables, with a ha-ha ditch guarding the approach. The house, its pavilions and the park have been listed since 28 August 1947, and the property remains in private hands, so access to the building itself is not open by right.

On 28 June 1944, during Operation Mitten, the 1st Suffolk Regiment stormed the château and suffered heavy losses; the building was badly damaged and repaired in the 1950s or 1960s. The nearby Château de la Petite Londe was completely destroyed in the fighting of 27 and 28 June 1944.
