Plage Grande Mer, Mediterranean beach in Cassis, France.
Plage Grande Mer is the main beach of Cassis with a pebbled shore and clear Mediterranean waters, framed by tall limestone cliffs. The seafloor descends gradually, creating spaces suited to swimming and water activities.
The beach sits beneath a medieval castle that defended the town from the 13th century onward. This fortification shaped Cassis as a protected harbor for local trade and fishing.
Local fishermen still work these waters today and sell their daily catches to waterfront restaurants that have served the community for generations.
Supervised swimming is available from May to September with showers and restrooms on site. Outside this season, the water is cooler but still accessible for swimming year-round.
Underground freshwater springs mix with Mediterranean currents beneath the beach, keeping water temperature surprisingly stable throughout the year. This natural feature makes swimming enjoyable even in cooler months.
