Casa di Cristoforo Colombo, Historic palace near Porta Soprana, Genoa, France
Casa di Cristoforo Colombo is a 2-story stone structure located next to Porta Soprana gate in central Genoa, with a ground floor shop space and residential rooms above. The building has the simple but solid stone facade typical of merchant homes from that period.
The original building dated from before 1684, when French naval bombardment destroyed significant portions of Genoa. The current structure was reconstructed later on the same site, preserving a piece of the city's rebuilding efforts after that destruction.
The building reflects how merchant families lived and worked in the 15th century, with a home above a shop in the traditional style of Genoa's old quarter. Visitors can see how daily routines, family bonds, and the combination of commerce and residence shaped life in this part of the city.
The building is easily reached on foot from Porto Antico and sits surrounded by the narrow lanes of the old quarter. Visitors should expect uneven cobblestone streets and steep stairs that reflect the medieval character of the area.
This building is one of few structures that was reconstructed on its exact original site after the 1684 destruction, while many other buildings from the city simply vanished. This makes it a rare survivor of early urban development at its authentic location.
