Ouvrage de la Lauffée, Military fortification near Verdun, France
The Ouvrage de la Lauffée is a military fortification located near Verdun situated at 334 meters elevation between the villages of Eix and Damloup. It features concrete bunkers, underground passages, and three masonry shelters at its center connected by an eight-meter-deep tunnel network, all surrounded by earthen ramparts.
This fortification was built between 1887 and 1888 and was strategically positioned between Fort de Vaux and Fort de Tavannes. During World War I, it served as a key defensive location in the Verdun sector.
The fortification housed 258 military personnel at the start of World War I, including infantry, artillery, and engineering units working together.
Access is gained through paths linking the two villages, and the terrain is hilly requiring proper footwear. Plan extra time to explore the underground sections and come prepared for uneven surfaces throughout the site.
During the war, German artillery bombarded this position heavily, prompting the construction of reinforced underground galleries to improve protection. These reinforced tunnels demonstrate how soldiers adapted their defenses in response to modern weaponry.
