Les étangs de Villepey, Ramsar protected area in Fréjus, France.
Les étangs de Villepey is a wetland stretching along the coast between the Argens River and the Mediterranean Sea. The area combines shallow lagoons, reed beds, and open water in a connected system.
This territory was acquired and protected by coastal authorities beginning in the 1980s through a gradual process. This approach allowed the natural character of the wetland to remain intact.
The name comes from the ponds that have shaped this landscape for generations. Visitors walk the marked paths to observe birds, amphibians, and plants across different habitats.
The site is accessible via wooden footbridges, viewing platforms, and observation points throughout the area. This infrastructure lets visitors explore sensitive habitats while keeping them away from fragile zones.
This area contains one of the rarest stretches of coastal wetland between the Camargue region and Italy. More than 200 bird species have been recorded here, making it a notable destination for bird watchers.
