Square des Ducs de Bourgogne, Garden square behind Palace of the Dukes, Dijon, France
The Square des Ducs de Bourgogne is a public garden space behind the Palace of the Dukes featuring pathways, planted areas, and seating throughout. The layout balances open grass sections with quieter corners for rest.
The square began as an animal garden for Marguerite de Flandre, wife of Duke Philippe le Hardi. It evolved over centuries while staying connected to the ducal residence and regional heritage.
The square displays several artworks, including a statue of Philippe le Bon and the contemporary sculpture Point de Vue by Philippe Ramette, which shape how visitors experience the space. These pieces create moments of reflection throughout the garden.
The space has been fully pedestrianized since 2018 and offers free access to all visitors. Benches are available for resting, and a book-sharing box lets you exchange reading materials.
This central urban space hosts local wildlife and creates a natural ecosystem in the middle of the historical district. Birds and other animals use it as a refuge within the built-up surroundings.
